The end of Ahab's dynasty occurs; the next one is Jehu's. In Judah, David's seed line is interrupted by Athaliah who rules for six years before being deposed. The first part of the book also deals with the death of Elijah and the ministry of Elisha. What follows is little more than a listing of kings until Israel is taken captive by Assyria. Hezekiah is king of Judah at that time, and he is righteous, thus prolonging Judah's history, but his son Manasseh does more evil than can be repaired-even by the restoration of Josiah. Within a few years of his death Judah is taken captive by Babylon. Frank Dunn points out the following facts: The phrase, right in the sight of God, appears 8 times; Because they have done evil in my sight occurs 21 times; According to the word of the Lord, or its equivalent, is used 24 times; The man of God finds its way into the text 36 times (138). The time period covered by 1 and 2 Kings begins with King David and ends with the king of Babylon; These books open with the temple being built and close with the temple burnt and destroyed; They start with David's successor being crowned and end with David's last successor being released from the house of captivity (141).
