BACKGROUND
The author of this general epistle is the brother of the Lord;
he writes to Jews who have obeyed the gospel and have also been
scattered through persecution. This book has been called the "Proverbs"
of the New Testament because of its practical advice. It covers a
variety of topics and is often quoted.
KEY VERSES
1:17 "Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes
down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no
variation or shadow of turning."
1:19 "Therefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear,
slow to speak, slow to wrath."
1:21 "Therefore lay aside all filthiness and overflow of wickedness,
and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able
to save your souls."
1:22 "But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving
yourselves."
1:25 "But he who looks into the perfect law of liberty...."
1:27 "Pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father is this:
to visit orphans and widows in their trouble, and to keep
oneself unspotted from the world."
2:24 "You see then that a man is justified by works and not by faith
only."
2:26 "For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without
works is dead also."
3:8 "But no man can tame the tongue. It is an unruly evil, full of
deadly poison."
4:10 "Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift
you up."
4:17 "Therefore, to him who knows to do good and does not do it, to
him it is sin."
5:16 "Confess your trespasses to one another, and pray for one
another, that you may be healed. The effective, fervent
prayer of a righteous man avails much."
5:19-20 "Brethren, if anyone among you wanders from the truth,
and someone turns him back, let him know that he who
turns a sinner from the error of his way will save a soul
from death and cover a multitude of sins."
